Here’s to the Irish! – Irish Gold Cocktail

When St. Patrick’s Day approaches, Eric reaches for the Guinness. Sometimes, he’ll drink a Guiness Draught as is, but he also likes Black & Tans, Black & Blues, and Half & Halfs. Black & Tans are considered the original Guinness beer blend, consisting of Bass Pale Ale with Guinness layered over top of it. The Black & Blue is Blue Moon Belgium White underneath the Guinness. This one is also referred to as Dark Side of the Moon. Half & Half usually refers to Harp Lager below the Guinness. None of these work for me as I am not a beer drinker.

To celebrate my Irishness around St. Patrick’s Day, I reach for the Irish Whiskey. Bushmill’s to be exact. Fortunately, there are many cocktails to be made with Irish Whiskey. (I’ve done a few here before: Irish Zinger, Irish Maid, and Shamrock Sour.) This year, I’m hooked on the Irish Gold Cocktail. Well, my version of it. Typically, Irish Gold cocktails use peach schnapps and ginger ale. I find that overly sweet with the peach and ginger ale overpowering my beloved whiskey. So, I swap both of them out, using Triple Sec for the peach schnapps and ginger beer (which is definitely NOT a beer!) in place of the ginger ale. A garnish of orange slice or a strip of orange peel completes the cocktail. Sláinte!

Irish Gold Cocktail

Makes one drink

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces Irish whiskey
  • 1 ounce Triple Sec
  • 1 ounce orange juice
  • 2 ounces ginger beer

 

Instructions:

Combine the whiskey, Triple Sec, and orange juice in a cocktail glass of ice. Add the ginger beer to the glass. Garnish with an an orange slice or some orange peel and serve.

Add the liquids to a cocktail glass of ice and garnish with a strip of orange peel.
