A Toast to the Irish! Irish Maid Cocktail

When toasting on St. Patrick’s Day, many people reach for some green-colored beer. That tradition is said to have started in New York City at the Schnerer Club in 1914. The ringing of the large green bell kicked off the festivities in the bar where everything was either colored green or decorated with green. The booze was flowing and Irish songs were being sung. The beer being served was a vibrant green color, courtesy of Dr. Thomas Curtin, a coroner’s physician, who had used a laundry bluing agent to color the amber liquid green. Since I am not a beer drinker and Eric prefers drinking Guinness (which would be very hard to change the color of!) this post is not about how to color your beer green for St. Patrick’s Day!
Personally, I prefer a cocktail using Irish Whiskey to celebrate my Irishness. This year’s cocktail for our celebration incorporates another favorite of mine, elderflower liqueur into the drink. And while the cocktail is not green, the garnish of cucumber slices is!

Irish Maid Cocktail

Irish Maid Cocktail (adapted from jamesonwhiskey.com) Makes 2 drinks

Ingredients:

  • 4 ounces Irish Whiskey
  • 1 ounce St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 2 ounces simple syrup
  • 6 cucumber slices, divided

Instructions:

Muddle 4 of the cucumber slices in a cocktail shaker.

Muddle the cucumber slices.

Add ice and the Irish Whiskey, St. Germain, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker. Cover and shake vigorously until the shaker is frosted. Strain the cocktail into 2 ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish each glass with a cucumber slice.
