Final Jewel – Belmont Jewel Cocktail

It is time for another drink recipe. With sailing season just under way (it is our sailing group’s tradition to enjoy some bourbon during a sail on Lake Michigan) and the final leg of the Triple Crown being run tomorrow, a bourbon cocktail is in order.

The Belmont Stakes is the third and most grueling competition of the Triple Crown. It is billed as the “Test of Champions” for good reason. This year, it has returned to its spot as the final jewel of the three races, after jumping to the first run position in 2020. It is also reinstating its traditional track length of 1-1/2 miles, after being shortened to 1-1/8 miles during the pandemic. The Belmont Stakes is the oldest continuous Triple Crown race, being run for over 150 years. With the first two legs being won by different horses, there will be no Triple Crown title awarded to a horse for 2021. But it should still be a great contest.

To get into the “spirit” of the race, we are indulging in the official drink of the Belmont Stakes. The Belmont Jewel is made with Woodford Reserved Kentucky Bourbon, the official bourbon of Belmont Park. The sweet and citrus flavors embody the feelings of summertime, making it a good choice even after the race.
