(Almost) National Lemonade Day! – Tropical Lemonade Punch

National Lemonade Day (August 20th) is 2 short days away! I posted the lemonade recipe we’ve been drinking this year at the beginning of warm weather season, at the end of May, but I did not want to let this day dedicated to my favorite Summery drink pass without some acknowledgement. So, this post is a spiked lemonade drink!

More well known as a non-alcoholic beverage today, punch was originally a beer alternative invented in the 17th century. At that time, men working on the British East India Company ships (apparently accomplished drinkers) were all throwing back their allotment of 10 pints of beer per shipman per day. Upon reaching the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the remaining beer in the cargo bays went flat and grew rancid. The sailors created new drinks out of indigenous ingredients once they reached land. Rum, citrus fruits, and spices were those ingredients. While it is unclear if the term “punch” comes from Sanskrit, the Indian dialect of Hindustani, or ancient Persia, it translates into “five”, as in the five ingredients initially used to make punch: sweet, sour, alcohol, water, and spice. This punch combines those five components in four ingredients, making for a quick, easy, & refreshing cocktail!
