Witching Time! – Lemon Witch Martini

Originally, I had planned to do a Halloween dessert recipe today and a martini recipe on Friday. After all, Fridays are pizza & martini nights at our house. But while contemplating possible titles for this post & the drink, I discovered that there is a full moon tonight. And a full moon on a partly cloudy night is called a witch’s moon. (I’m sure it is partly cloudy somewhere tonight!) It seemed appropriate to post the drink recipe today.

Eric & I are lemon lovers and often drink lemon martinis. Wanting to add a twist to our typical lemon martini, I experimented with some Liquore Strega. Strega is an Italian herbal liqueur I first encountered last summer while trying out a poached fruit recipe. Produced in Italy since 1860, Strega contains about 70 different herbal ingredients including mint, fennel & saffron (hence the bright yellow color) along with some honey. The liqueur gives a richness to the drink and mellows the sharp bite of lemon. Strega is Italian for witch, inspiring the name of the drink and fitting in with the Halloween & full moon theme of the post very nicely!
